Location: Gunnison Arts Center Main Gallery
Details: Main Gallery Exhibit The Art History of the Gunnison Valley" Western Colorado University, Master in Gallery & Museum Management (MGMM) Exhibit Dates: November 6 - 30 Opening Date: Friday, November 6, 5 - 8 pm. The Gunnison Arts Center and the Master of Gallery & Museum Management (MGMM) of Western Colorado University will be holding an exhibition on the “The Art History of the Gunnison Valley” which opens on November 6, 2020 at 5 PM at the Gunnison Arts Center’s Main Gallery. The event will present research on the rich and far-reaching narrative of artistic production in the Gunnison Country. The project to produce the art history of the valley emerged from a Crested Butte Creative District project proposed by Nicolas Reti and Ivy Walker of the Oh Be Joyful Gallery. The Creative District also funded the production of a Schaffer Nickel video on the same subject. The project continued to develop when they joined up with research being done by WCU Art Historian Heather Orr, retired WCU librarian Ethel Rice, and the descendant of Henry and Catherine Richter (WCU’s first art instructors) who had been working on a very similar project of to study the university’s art collection and its faculty. Previous incarnations of the exhibition have appeared at the Oh Be Joyful Gallery, the Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum, and the Crested Butte Arts Festival. In 2019, the Master of Gallery & Museum Management (MGMM) program staged the show at the Quigley Gallery as part of their summer Practicum. Their research revealed a fascinating period of painting in the early years of Gunnison in the 1880s and 90s, with these early painters all being women. Now, new research done with Dr. Jeffrey Taylor, MGMM Program Director, and Jan Nixon of the Pioneer Museum have revealed even more works by these early artists of the Gunnison Valley. All of those works have been generous lent by the Pioneer Museum to the exhibition, and for the first time all of the original works can be seen. The installation was completed by students of the MGMM for their for their Exhibition Principles course taught by Jeff Erwin. “The Art HIstory of the Gunnison Valley” was originally slated as the sister exhibit to the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street “Crossroads” Exhibition to be shown at the Gunnison Arts Center during October & November, 2020. With assistance from the Arts Cetner’s Megan West and Brieanna Radford, this exhibit moved from the Upper Gallery to the Main Gallery at the postponement of the Smithsonian project.
