 First Friday ArtWalk & Music: GAC Gallery Openings May 7, 5:00 – 8:00 pm ~Main Gallery: “Blue Mesa National Park” by Teresa Golden The Main Gallery will be transformed into a beautiful Wildlife Display. Pieces of canvas and metal art will showcase the rich wildlife environment of Blue Mesa Reservoir and Gunnison county. Teresa believes that the varied public lands and State Wildlife Viewing areas to include the 43,000 acres of Curecanti National Recreation area ought to be consolidated and transformed into one Beautiful "Blue Mesa National Park." Blue Mesa Reservoir is the largest body of water in Colorado. It is a special place where people and wildlife coexist. Blue Mesa National Park would be a preeminent place where diverse and abundant wildlife and their habitat are protected for generations to come while maintaining an enhanced recreational area for people to enjoy the beauty and essence that this Rocky Mountain paradise offers. In her solo exhibition, Teresa hopes to inspire legislative momentum to create a truly new and alluring "Blue Mesa National Park" that would draw tourism to the region, already put on the map by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, located downriver and captivate the hearts of the people to visit and appreciate our unique place in the High Rockies of Gunnison county. ~Upper Gallery: “Space Between” by Ben McLoughlin Pastel Drawings & Mixed Media Works Space Between can be taken both literally and metaphorically. In one sense, space literally refers to the shapes between and around the main subject(s) of an image, known as positive and negative shapes within a composition. As a visual arts teacher, I stress to my students the importance of considering positive and negative spaces when designing their compositions. In another sense, the space between refers to what the visual space represents metaphorically. It is the space we occupy, between our internal and external words, between two people in a relationship, a bond between siblings, or the spiritual experience between great canyon walls. ~Featured ArtWalk Studio Artist: Abra Karbin, Ceramicist, Gunnison Arts Center Clay Studio My studio space is split between the GAC’s Clay Studio and my house, depending on what my daughter will let me do for the day. I'm a functional potter. I mainly work on the wheel but also play around with hand building. Lately I have been exploring surface design and have been experimenting with the practices of Mishima and sgraffito, which allow me to take a trip down memory lane to when I used to tattoo.
